The instructional paths around Suomenlinna are designed to teach history and the natural sciences and are an experiential alternative to indoor lectures and textbooks. Hostel Suomenlinna programmes have even been developed to cover certain parts of the national school curriculum.

Each of the programme choices emphasizes the development of vital social skills by working in groups and allowing participants to see the rewards of successful teamwork. In difficult situations, these skills can later be used to loosen tense moods, open social quagmires and wake the sleeping team player in outsiders or loners.
